It doesn’t get much simpler than the Toyota Corolla’s control layout. The stereo is clearly marked with large buttons kept to the absolute minimum. The placement of the auxiliary audio jack could be better, though, as it requires draping a cord clumsily across the shifter. The climate controls consist of three large knobs that control airflow direction, fan speed and temperature — if you can’t figure them out in a matter of seconds, you probably haven’t been in a car built after 1990.

Although the six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission provides lightning-quick shifts with rapid response from paddle-shifter inputs, we actually found ourselves letting the car do its own thing in automatic mode. It, too, snaps through gears with seamless precision and with none of the herky-jerky motions sometimes associated with other automated manual transmissions. Under light acceleration, it has a tendency to shift up to 6th gear as quickly as possible to maximize fuel economy, but with so much engine torque and an eagerness to downshift quickly, this never proves to be a problem. And it’s effective, since the GT-R manages 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined — pretty darn good for a car this blindingly fast.

The XF’s trunk is quite roomy, easily fitting two golf bags and a large suitcase into its 17-cubic-foot hold. A rear-facing child safety seat can be squeezed into the backseat’s central position, but taller drivers may find themselves scootching their seats up to accommodate junior. Front-facing child seats fit well.

Exterior styling is derivative but largely inoffensive, though it fails to mitigate the 2009 Lincoln MKS’s considerable heft. The interior looks nice at a glance, particularly the top of the dash, which is covered with imitation stitched leather. However, the center stack plastics feel low-grade, as do the buttons below the CD slot. Similarly, two of the storage bins in the center console are covered by segmented plastic sliders that would look more at home in a Ford Ranger pickup truck. The cargo pass-through door, which is exposed when the rear armrest is folded down, also feels and looks low-rent.
